CryptoPunk #7523, which gets its more familiar name from the medical mask it wears and the blue tone of its skin, was sold by a collector and digital art advocate known as SillyTuna. Bidding opened at $1.5B and lasted about four minutes; the final sale price, which includes fees, was $11.75M. The nonfungible token (NFT) is one of nine alien punks and one of 175 with a mask, Sotheby's said. There are a total of 10K unique CryptoPunks, pixelated images that were randomly generated using algorithms developed in June 2017 by software developers John Watkinson and Matt Hall. They were created using ethereum blockchain. On May 11, auction house Christie's sold a set of nine CryptoPunks, which were owned by Hall and Watkinson,
